Harriet Tubman...

                                   Harriet Tubman...

"Yes Gracie" says Gracie's teacher Mrs.Sitter. "I just don't understand this Harriet Tubman Unit." says Gracie." Don't worry dear I'm sure you'll get it soon" says Mrs.Sitter. A little while later the bell rings and Gracie skips all the way home. After finishing her homework and eating a delicious dinner consisting of salad, soup, and a little bit of bread Gracie plopped onto her bed and began to dream.

That night Gracie dreamed that just like young Harriet Tubman she was living on a plantation! It was owned by Mr. Jacob and his wife Mrs. Emily. Even though the work was backbreaking and Gracie's only escape was when everyone was asleep. She and her friend Emmy would play until daybreak.
The only thing keeping Gracie at the plantation was the fun she and Emmy had together, but little did Gracie know something would soon happen that would make Gracie want to leave more than ever.

One week later...
Gracie had just overheard some awful news! Mr. Jacob was planing to sell her to another plantation without Emmy!!! Soon the girls devised a plan... Gracie was to run away! Even though Emmy was to stay behind the girls promised that they would never forget each other.

That night just as Gracie was about to run for it a strange figure appeared at the plantation gate door. "Running away"? the figure asks. Gracie began to shiver with fear when the figure approached her but her fear melts away when she realizes who it is. It's the famous, Harriet Tubman!

"Shhh" says Harriet we don't want them to hear us she says motioning to the plantation owner house. " Come quickly we have little time and it is a cloudy sky so the north star will be little help to us" she says. Still in shock Gracie followed Harriet silently through the woods. Suddenly Harriet silences Gracie. " What is it?" Gracie stammers. "Travelers and slave catchers" Harriet says. It's just then that Gracie realized that they were near the main road, and although Gracie doesn't see any travelers slave catchers patrol the street guns in hand. "Alright what should we do?" Gracie shudders.

" You see how the slave catchers are very alert? Well we are going to make some very loud noises over to the right and while the slave catchers go over there to check it out we can make a run for it." Harriet whispers to Gracie. Gracie decides to put the plan into action! So, Harriet bangs some rocks together while Gracie keeps lookout, and just as Harriet predicted the slave catchers walked right over to where Harriet was standing! Then just as planed Harriet came over to where Gracie was standing (Quite some distance away from the slave catchers.) and the two of them silently slipped across the main road.

"Whew! I thought we were dead meat over there!" Gracie exclaimed. "Shh no time for chit chat we'll spend the night over there in those woods." Harriet points to the most desolate looking forest Gracie had ever seen. "That is where we're sleeping!" Gracie says in shock. "Yup" Harriet answers like it was a feather bed. Gracie sighs but follows Harriet as the tiptoe into the forest. After a few minutes Harriet stops and points "We will sleep in those leaves" she said. Gracie realizes that there is no point in arguing and begins trying to make herself at home. (Which is very hard to do when you're sleeping in a pile of leaves.) Though at last she does manage to fall asleep!

"Gracie!" Harriet says to a yawning Gracie I would like you to meet Mrs. Sier she's an abolitionist and when she saw me carrying you she offered us to stay with her. Gracie soon awakens to see an old lady around 60 looking down and smiling at her. Even though Gracie knew no slave catcher would ever open there door to a slave she couldn't help but lean over to Harriet and ask how she could be so sure that this lady was an abolitionist. "Because she had hung a certain blanket on her front door that meant this place was a safe house for slaves and no slave catchers knew about this code.

After a quick breakfast there Gracie and Harriet headed out to continue on their quest for freedom. As they trekked through the wilderness they began to hear the barks and growls of dogs probably from slave catchers so, they quietly hop into a nearby stream "it's so that dogs can't smell our scent" Harriet explains.

After a while Gracie finds a small clearing where they decide to spend the night. Gracie was super exited not only because she really wanted to go to sleep but also because tomorrow was the day when Gracie would finally become free! That night Gracie fell asleep while dreaming of becoming free.

The next morning Gracie awoke first and was just taking a morning walk around the clearing when suddenly, Gracie realized she was surrounded and not just by trees but by slave catchers and they all began closing in on her! With a start Harriet woke up and she quickly got on her feet and managed to trip one of the men "RUN!!!" shouted Harriet as Gracie quickly ran from the clearing.

Luckily, they managed to escape and for the next few hours all they could  talk about was their morning adventure. So once they got to Canada both of them were very sad to leave one another."thanks for every thing Harriet" said Gracie and with a silent hug both Harriet and Gracie departed and went there separate ways.

"Come on Gracie the bus is almost here!"Gracie's mom yells with a jolt Gracie gets up and starts to get ready it's while doing this that Gracie realizes that everything that had happened to her was a dream! She scrambles onto the bus and into her class and when Mrs.Sitter gives out the test Gracie new they answer to every single question. When the test scores came home Gracie was very happy because she had gotten an A+!
